Abstract In recent times, teaching has evolved from the old missionary approach that was teacher-centered.
Teaching has a new approach which is learner-centered, where the learner is given credit with some knowledge and skill. Thus, the teacher now only guides, facilitates, motivates, and allows room for interaction. This study was initiated because it has been noticed that most teachers in Upper Basic Education level in Abakiliki Education zone in Ebonyi State do not have adequate
training and experience in classroom management to address the problems of disruptions in the
classroom. This study aims to address the question on why class management strategies are not employed in the management and control of the classroom by teachers to ensure effective teaching
in upper basic education level in Abakiliki Education Zone in Ebonyi State of Nigeria. The study equally aims to determine the effects of supportive and corrective classroom management
strategies for the teaching of business studies in the upper basic education level of the Abakaliki
Education Zone by male and female teachers. A descriptive survey research approach was deployed on 61 business education secondary school teachers in Abakiliki Education zone. The findings revealed that supportive and corrective classroom management are effective in teaching
upper basic education level students. The study also shows that there is no statistically significant
difference in the mean ratings of male and female business studies teachers on the extent that corrective and supportive classroom management strategies affect the effective teaching of business studies in selected schools.

Abstract Early Childhood and Care Education (ECCE) has attracted global focus as governments of
members of United Nations (UN) strive to meet target 4.2 of the Sustainable Development
Goals (SDGs), to ensure that all girls and boys have equal access to quality care and
preprimary education by 2030. ECCE specialists and stakeholders in Nigeria are involved in
various ways, including the organization of workshops for caregivers and teachers to meet
the target. In this paper, we present the perceptions of trainees on their learning experiences
in a 3-day workshop organized for caregivers/teachers, focusing on child-centered
approaches/methodologies in early years. Using a descriptive survey design, all the trainees
rated the extent they learnt the methodologies in a Likert-questionnaire. The results
suggested that the trainees’ perceptions on the learning of all the methodologies were

Abstract Abstract
The need to improve on the principles and practices in the teacher – education
sub – sector in Nigerian education system, so as to raise the levels of literacy and
numeracy, which is still comparatively low from global standards has engaged
the attention of stakeholders. Thus, this study was aimed at assessing the pre –
service teachers’ competence in literacy and numeracy skills at the entry point
into the tertiary institutions in Delta State, using a descriptive survey design. The
population comprised of all pre – service teachers admitted into the tertiary
institutions in the 2017/2018 academic session. The sample is made up of 600 pre – service teachers drawn from the four colleges of education in Delta State,
through a purposive sampling technique. The instruments used are Pre – service
Teachers’ Literacy Test (PTLT) and Pre – service Teachers’ Numeracy Test
(PTNT), which were constructed and validated by the researchers. Three research
questions and six hypotheses guided the study. Descriptive statistics (e.g. mean,
standard error, skewness, Kurtosis, frequency), t – tests and Pearson – product
moment correlation was used for analyzing the data using the SPSS computer
package. It was found among others that: the pre – service teachers’ literacy skill
was average while the numeracy skill was very low at the entry point; there was
significant relationship between their literacy and numeracy skills and there was
no significant difference between the literacy and numeracy skills of male and
female pre – service teachers at entry point. These results underscore the fact that
the entrants into the Colleges of education in Delta State, which prepares the
professional teachers for the basic education level, are not students with very high
levels literacy and numeracy skills. Recommendations based on these findings
are provided in this paper.

Their perceptions were obtained using a structured questionnaire. The data collected was analyzed using percentages and mean ratings (X). The results showed that the female students perceived that their studies so far have imparted positively their capability, disposition, attitudes and aspirations in the following specific areas:
• Confidence to perform leadership roles in the society (X = 3.50)
• Realization of the importance of early education of the girl child (X = 3.55)
• Confidence to support equal education of both boys and girls in the family (= 3.65)
• Desire to study further if given the opportunity (X = 3.65)
• Disposition that marriage should not disrupt the education of girls (X = 3.75)
• Opportunity to support family income significantly (X = 3.75)
• Understanding the limitation of females who are not educated from contributing their best in the society (3.80)
• Confidence to aspire for higher positions and jobs in the society (X = 3.95)
These results which portray profound reality elucidate the potential of the part time programmes to enhance the self concept and productivity of women who dare to rise to the challenge of their low level of education. These female students formed 65% of the total number of students in that session, with 15% of them in the age range below 25years, 72% in the range (25-40years) while 13% are above 40years. Their perceptions imply that the experiences, knowledge and skills which they acquired during their studies could empower them to encourage the girl children in the families to enroll for and complete their higher education before marriage. Recommendations based on these result are focused on the ways to re-position these part-time programmes so as to sustain their potentials in empowering women for overall national development. One of such ways is to organize separate accreditation of the part time programmes so as to ensure their quality just as it is done for the full time mode.
